With 2020 behind our back, we all wish for the coming year to be better. Yet with the economy still full of unknowns amidst the COVID-19 situation, it is crucial to prepare for any pitfalls coming our way.
Derailers - know how they would influence you
Derailers come from our weaknesses or the underuse/overuse of our strengths. These could be identified through 3 ways we suggested.
With an understanding of what your possible derailers are, think about the context at which derailers would become dominant. Think about the circumstances within which you would feel stressed, overwhelmed, and resort to derailing behaviors.
How would you remind yourself to be aware when derailing behaviors surface? What signals could warn you of them? What habits could be useful as a self reflection and reminder?
Try to visualize the scenarios in which your derailers became dominant and use that as a reflecting cue for you. How would you handle the situation differently?
External threats - prepare for the unexpected
Using techniques like PEST analysis, we could systematically forecast the external factors which may pose potential threats for us. We recommend following these steps to prepare for the coming of external threats.
Review your PEST analysis. What would you consider as the top 3 threats in the coming year? Think about in what ways these threats are going to affect your career and your life.
Focus on what you could do. The external nature of threats imply the elements which you have no control over. However, no matter how the situation unfolds, there are certain aspects in which you have control over. Looking at the top 3 threats in 2021, what could you do to prepare for them, or even mitigate them?
Make yourself agile and adaptive. The year 2020 is a good example of unexpected changes. What habits could you adopt in order to be agile and adaptive to unexpected changes? Perhaps a habit of frequent self reflection? Connection with someone who could share helpful reminders? Source of information to keep up-to-date with changes in the external world?
Make use of the reflections above to prepare yourself for what's coming at you in 2021.
